The cup you pour when the meal is done and the kitchen finally goes quiet. Pu'er (aged, fermented Chinese tea) drinks deep and earthy, smooth as a forest floor after rain, without the grassy bite of green tea. Brew it hot after a heavy dinner, sip it through a slow working morning, or pour it alongside rich food where a lighter tea would disappear. It carries caffeine at a soft, moderate level, enough to steady the day without the sharp edge of coffee.

Pu'er earns its reputation as an acquired taste, and we would rather be honest than oversell it. The first cup reads earthy, woody, a little wild. Give it a rinse and a proper steep and that muskiness rounds into something mellow and full that regular drinkers chase for years. These are whole aged leaves, chosen as a welcoming way into a category that intimidates a lot of newcomers.

One measure of leaf gives you more than one pot. Pu'er re-steeps beautifully, opening and softening across three to four infusions, so a single teaspoon stretches through a long afternoon. Single ingredient: pu'er tea leaves. No sugar, no preservatives. Naturally vegan.

Common Questions

How do I brew it?

Use one teaspoon of leaf per eight ounces of water and heat fresh water to a full boil, 212°F. Give it a quick rinse first: pour the hot water over the leaves and tip it off after a few seconds to wake them. Then steep the real cup for five to ten minutes. The leaves hold up for three to four infusions, so keep pouring after the first.

Why does it smell earthy or musty?

That deep, earthy, sometimes barnyard aroma is the signature of aged pu'er, not a flaw. It comes from the way the leaves are fermented and stored over time. A rinse before your first steep clears the surface and lets the rounder, smoother notes come forward. If the earthiness reads strong, shorten your steep and build up from there.

I'm new to pu'er and it feels intimidating. Where do I start?

Start small and go slow. Brew a single teaspoon, rinse it, and keep your early steeps on the shorter side so the flavor stays gentle. This leaf is chosen as a smooth, mellow entry, so you are not fighting a harsh cup on day one. Sample and settle in before you commit to drinking it every day.

Does it have caffeine?

Yes. Pu'er sits at a moderate caffeine level, softer than coffee and steadier than a strong black tea. The later infusions run lighter than the first pour, so an afternoon pot lands gentler than the opening cup.
